World's First Electric Wingsuit Takes Sport to New Heights
Peter Pizagalli Published 01/30/2022
Daredevil Peter Salzmann teamed up with BMWi to create the world's first wingsuit powered by an electric motor. Could this be the extreme sport of the future?
Wingsuits have been around for quite a while now, allowing those daring enough to do it the chance to glide at incredible speeds and perform some truly death-defying stunts along the rocky slopes and cliff faces that traditionally serve as the launching point for these thrill-seekers. The only limit is that once you jump, you're fully committed to a downward path - the suit's gliders help control the descent and glide on air currents, but your max height is always your jump point... until now. Using a custom-made electric engine deploying two 50V batteries, this new prototype by BMWi can generate enough lift to actually gain altitude for up to five minutes. It's taking the concept of wingsuits to dizzying new heights, and we'll almost certainly see it in a splashy Hollywood heist movie soon enough.
