It turns out, the solution to depression may be filling your head with electricity.
Those with depression know just how difficult it can be to tackle the damn thing. Pills can only do so much, and while everyone around you might tell you that things like sunlight and exercise will make you feel better, actually getting around to experiencing those things is pretty difficult when you’re, you know, depressed.
While we’re still learning about it, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is showing considerable promise in the field of depression treatment. People have found positive impacts related to lessening symptoms of depression and OCD, and others have found that it’s helped them quit smoking.
How does it work? According to the Mayo Clinic, “an electromagnetic coil is placed against the scalp of your head. This coil delivers magnetic pulses that stimulate nerve cells in the region of your brain involved in mood control and depression.”
