Plane Knocks Apart Flock of Birds Like Bowling Pins

That’s a strike!

Birds can do a surprising amount of damage to airliners. As noted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, bird and other wildlife strikes to aircraft cause “an estimated $900+ million in damage to U.S. civil and military aircraft annually.” Not only that, but “over 250 people have been killed worldwide as a result of wildlife strikes since 1988.”

Usually, this occurs because a bird makes its way into the engine. However, that’s not the only way a plane and a bird can come into contact. For example, a flock of birds can hit the plane’s nose and, as this video shows, fly apart like they’ve just been struck by an expert roll at the local lanes.
