People Are Making ChatGPT Talk in Really Uncomfortable Accents
ChatGPT now has a voice mode, which allows users to ask the A.I. questions and get responses in a naturalistic manner.
Of course, like any A.I. product, it was always going to be a countdown until someone found a way to mess with it, and now, the internet has: by making the thing do accents.
Across the web, people are asking their ChatGPTs to pretend to be a Mexican immigrant, or demand that it speak to them in ebonics — and, being the dutiful partner it always is, the A.I. obliges.
The results are… Okay, I’m not going to be the one to call the computer racist, but there’s just something that doesn’t sit right with me about the idea of telling a device to “talk to me like a Chinese man who barely speaks English.”
Sure, there’s likely a practical use for this application, but for every one person who’s helped by the product, there’s going to be at least a dozen teenagers asking their ChatGPT to speak to them in a Jamaican patois but using a South African accent.
Is that good for society? I have no idea.

Advanced voice mode from ChatGPT is next level when it comes to languages and accents.

I’m testing it today and asked it to tell me a story with a South Louisiana accent.
The dialect is unique to southern LA, both in its sound and vocabulary.
It actually sounds like some… pic.twitter.com/YAEm2QJ1GI
