Fan Causes Massive Pileup in Tour de France By Trying to Take a Selfie

Watching dozens of bikes in the world’s greatest cycling race flash by you at breakneck speeds is surely a sight you don’t want to miss. But one Tour de France fan during Sunday’s 15th stage decided that being up close and personal wasn’t enough, and reached into the approaching pack for a selfie.

The result? Almost the entire field on their backsides.

“An arm came out and clipped a shoulder, and down we all came like Skittles,” Carlton Kirby, one of the riders, said.

According to the BBC, the fan’s arm hit Team Jumbo-Visma rider Sepp Kuss, which sent him tumbling in front of the following pack.

This isn’t the first time a spectator has caused a big Tour pileup, as a fan with a sign also took down a large portion of the 2021 field. “Getting through an entire Tour de France without a spectator causing a massive pileup challenge. (Impossible),” @cheesefury joked on Twitter.

Fortunately, there were no major injuries from the accident, and all the riders resumed the stage. Hopefully, too, the spectator has learned their lesson about how to better — and safely — enjoy the moment. As Team Cofidis tweeted, “You don’t need a phone to create mind-blowing memories.”
