When you’re in an airplane, some things become a lot harder to see than you might expect. You’re going pretty fast in that thing, so some aspects of the landscape, such as distances and the placement of power lines, may be more difficult to judge than they initially appear.

If you thought that “placement of power lines” bit was oddly specific, well, that’s because it appears to be exactly what happened here, where a pilot ducked a bit too low and had his canopy destroyed by a cable.
