Driver OK After Insane F1 Crash
Daniel Bonfiglio Published 07/08/2022
At this weekend's British Grand Prix at the iconic Silverstone track, the race began with a scary incident involving Zhao Guanyu in his Alpha Romeo flipping over, skidding through the gravel, and eventually landing wedged between the catch fencing and tire bundles.
The race would go on to be one of the most exciting of the year, if not of the last few years, with Carlos Sainz claiming his maiden victory, but even that was overshadowed by the F1 fandom's overwhelming relief at the news that China's first Formula 1 driver was safe after being transported to hospital.
Among other things, Zhao Guanyu's life was likely saved by the halo, an initially controversial head safety innovation that wasn't even part of Formula 1 until 2018. Ultimately, the amazing safety strides F1 has made allow us to view this crash with relief instead of regret, and likely mean that Zhao will be ready to go next time out in Austria.
