Climate Protestors Turn the Trevi Fountain Black With Charcoal

Although the climate protests that swept across Europe late last year have died down somewhat, anti-oil and fossil fuel demonstrators are still active; this time at Rome's Trevi Fountain. Or I should say, in Rome's Trevi Fountain.

Broader coverage of the protests began last October when two "Just Stop Oil" protestors threw tomato soup on Van Gogh's Sunflower in London's Trafalgar Square. Since then, the climate groups have continued their unorthodox methods, recently seizing a tanker full of cooking oil, mistaking it for crude oil.

In Trevi Fountain, demonstrators from the “Ultima Generazione” group poured black vegetable charcoal into the fountain's water, turning it black. They demanded "an immediate stop to public subsidies to all fossil fuels." The protest comes just days after devastating flooding around Italy's Emilia-Romagna region, even leading to the cancelation of Imola's Formula 1 race.

"Enough of these absurd attacks on our artistic heritage," Rome mayor Roberto Gualtieri said on Twitter.
