1980s Yearbook Still Separated ‘Best Looking Students’ by Race

The United States used to be really, really racist. Now, it’s slightly less racist, which is a change we can all be proud of. Good for us!

While people like to think that the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s immediately put everyone on an equal playing field, that wasn’t the case. People fought desegregation long after it was made mandatory, and to this day, there are plenty of places where efforts have been made to keep races separated, albeit a little more quietly this time around.

Still, again, we’ve made a fair bit of progress here. For example, as recently as 1984, this Georgia school had a yearbook competition for its best looking students — a competition that, for some reason, was separated by race.

Now, we can be proud that our hotness competitions are equal opportunity!
