The First-Ever Mugshots 1859-1876

These vintage portraits of British criminals were taken at the Bedford Prison more than 150 years ago.

1.

George Bennett who wore slicked back hair and curled moustache, had many poaching convictions and assaulted a police constable.

2.

Nothing is known about this gentlemen who is clearly very unhappy about this new "mugshot" idea.

Elizabeth Evans, 36, was sentenced for 3 years for stealing.

George Henry Charles Perry, 32, was arrested for pretending to be a priest to con people.

5.

Samuel Oliver, 46, was sentenced to 21 days for begging. Records show that he was "ruddy" faced, had imperfect speech and a bad leg after a stroke.

6.

William Flint, 29, was also arrested for begging and was described as having boil marks and ginger eyebrows.

7.

Joseph Hoorwood, 27, was sentenced to 7 years for stealing 3 spades.

8.

James Knapton, 22, was sentenced to 5 years for setting a stack of oats on fire.

9.

Henry Johnson, 18, sentenced to 2 years for stealing a purse.

William Rose, 18, was arrested for stealing a coat, pants and three handkerchiefs. Records show that he had a bullet wound on the back of his neck.

Henry James Green aka James Middleton, 23, sentenced to 4 years for stealing.

12.

William Moorhead, 22, was accused of stealing 8 stockings 10 and a calico shirt.

13.

John Jackson, 20, was sentenced 10 year for assault.

William Jones was sentenced to 7 years in prison for stealing.

15.

Jane Green aka Elizabeth Locker, 20, was sentenced for 4 years for stealing what was described as a married stocking weaver with a "very long face".

Catherine May, 26, was sentenced to 3 years for stealing a purse. She died 5 months into her prison term.

John Robinson, was sentenced for stealing.

18.

Thomas Jenkins, 39, was arrested for refusing to give evidence in a case.

19.

William Doyle, 17, was sentenced to 6 years in prison for setting a stack of wheat on fire. He was described as not being able to read or write, and having a pale complexion.

Joseph Blagdon, was arrested for begging. Records state that he had burn marks on his right arm, forehead and nose.

21.

William Dazley, 27, charged with stealing. He was an Ironmonger's assistant, who was described as having sandy hair, a brown birth mark on his left shoulder and a scar on his upper foot.

22.

Daniel Burke aka John Watson from Whitechapel was sent to prison February 4th, 1861.
