Honestly, I'd keep the dog too!
When you get a dog, it's VERY important to realize that it's a major commitment - it's like having a kid, essentially. They need your time, attention, and care - i.e., you can't just go gallivanting off to do whatever you felt like and abandoning it with your friends.
Thankfully, this story has a happy ending with the dog finding a much better home/owner with the dog sitter.
