Have you ever wondered where that term comes from? Wetting your whistle? There's also 'Whetting your appetite," but it's a different 'wet.' So what's the difference?

Well, whetting something means sharpening it by grinding it on a stone, while wetting something obviously means introducing it to moisture. The two words are not interchangeable within the two expressions - whetting your whistle (mouth) would be pretty painful and soaking your appetite is just nonsensical.
