The death penalty is a controversial issue. A lot of people agree some folks have mucked up the world enough that it’s time for an exit, and a of lot others think the practice is barbaric. 

But almost everyone agrees that the actual execution shouldn’t be barbaric, so there are devices to make it as quick, humane, and pain-free as possible. That was the initial idea with the electric chair, and they really missed the mark on that one.

Electric chairs are still insane, horrifying objects today, but back when they were still finding their legs, these things looked like dining chairs that even the devil would think were too scary.
