Today, Long Island’s psychedelic metalheads may be best remembered by many younger folk for SNL’s sendup of their classic hit, "Don’t Fear the Reaper." But Blue Oyster Cult was much more than a cowbell.
Pioneers and founding fathers of heavy metal while incorporating sci-fi and occult themes, Blue Oyster Cult brought a goofy, yet intellectual viewpoint to the world of rock music. Tongue-in-cheek tracks like Godzilla coexisted with more existential, serious songs like Don’t Fear the Reaper. The legacy of their style can be seen in heavy music even to this day.
Put on your sunglasses and check out these vintage rock and roll pics from a time when guitars ruled the world, and aliens, monsters, and death were common lyrical themes. I got a fever, and the only prescription is… well, you know the rest.
