In the ‘90s, Power Rangers was a huge hit. Adapted and re-edited for the US from the Japanese show “Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger,” the show captivated and mystified children all across America.
Power Rangers was many kids’ first exposure to Japanese culture. To an American child, Japan’s idea of what should happen in a TV show might seem pretty strange. Colorful superheroes fighting big rubbery monsters and cackling villains? Power Rangers sure was weird, but it was far from the weirdest superhero show Japan produced. They’ve been pumping them out since the ‘60s, and most of them never made it to the United States.
There’s a good reason for that, as you’ll see when you check out some of these seriously out-there Japanese supervillains.
