Maybe we'd have paid more attention if the history lessons we'd gotten had these kinds of interesting facts. No, instead we just had "In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue," conveniently glossing over the fact that Columbus was kind of an idiot (there's a reason the continent he 'discovered' is named after a different explorer from the same era).
