10 Real Life Murder Houses That Are Creepy As Hell

Some houses just have a weird vibe.

Anthony Sowell was raised in a violent home with six siblings. It was clear he was bad news from a young age when he raped his niece for nearly two years when he was only 11. He grew up to work in the US Marine Corps, but returned to Cleveland, Ohio shortly after joining. There, he assaulted a woman in his home. He was convicted of attempted rape and spent 15 years in prison. He was released in 2005, and started dating the niece of Cleveland’s mayor shortly after. She complained of a smell in his house, which he blamed on his stepmother and a nearby sausage factory. In 2009, a woman reported being attacked and raped by him, so the police searched his house and found two corpses in the living room. After Sowell was arrested, remains of 11 other women were found in his backyard. With Sowell currently on death row, the house was demolished.

In 2001, Andrea Yates drowned all five of her children in the bathtub of her house in Houston, Texas. Her kids were aged from six months to seven years old. She served six years in prison, but due to being diagnosed with mental illness, was moved to a low-security state mental hospital. Someone else moved into Yates’ home only three years after the murders, saying it was “in a good location”.

Possibly one of the most famous murder houses in America, the Amityville Horror House is the house where 23-year-old Ronald “Butch” DeFeo killed his parents in the middle of the night in 1974. After he murdered his parents in their bed, he went to his siblings’ rooms and killed all of them too. He was convicted of murder and is currently in prison, serving out six consecutive life sentences. The house has been remodeled and the address has been changed, but it is still a huge tourist attraction.

On a summer day in 1892, Andrew Borden and his second wife Abby were found chopped up in their house. Everyone in Fall River, Massachusetts believed it was Andrew’s daughter Lizzie who had committed the murders, but the judge wasn’t convinced, so Lizzie was acquitted of the charges a year later. The home is now a bed and breakfast and is quite the popular spot.

Jeffery Dahmer killed 17 young men in this Milwaukee apartment between 1978 and 1991. He was only 18 when he killed his first victim. He would lure them in with money and then spike their drinks with sleeping pills. He would then strangle them and rape their corpses. It wasn’t until one lucky guy escaped from the apartment and told the police that Dahmer had threatened to eat his heart, that he got caught. Police searched his apartment and found countless Polaroid pictures of severed body parts, limbs packed in the fridge for later consumption, a severed head and a torso dumped in a vat of acid. Dahmer admitted to all 17 murders and was convicted, but was bludgeoned to death by another inmate in 1994. The entire apartment complex was torn down.

Anthony Hardy had his first run-in with the law when police found a dead prostitute in his bed. Despite finding cuts and bruises on her head, Hardy wasn’t arrested because she appeared to have died from a heart attack. However, after a homeless man went scavenging for food in Hardy’s bins and found the remains of two other women, the police caught up with him again. Blood stains in his London flat matched their DNA, and he was sentenced to life in prison.

In August 1969, members of the Manson family killed nine people at four different locations over a period of five weeks. The most infamous killing spree they went on was at Roman Polanski’s house. They murdered his pregnant wife Sharon Tate and four other visitors. Charles Manson and his followers are all still in prison serving life sentences (except for Susan Atkins who died in 2009). In 1994, Roman Polanski’s home was destroyed and replaced with a new mansion. Jeff Franklin, creator of Full House and Malcolm In The Middle currently resides there.

In 1995, the Goff family had their home repainted. Irma Goff, mother of the family, was away visiting her son in Ocean City, Maryland. Irma specifically asked the painter not to bring his assistant Alvarez, an Ecuadoran laborer, because she didn’t want any strange men around her three daughters. The painter brought him along anyway and when he stepped away, Alvarez assaulted the youngest daughter, before killing her and his boss. Alvarez proceeded to kill the two other daughters and their father. He then called the police and blamed the murders on his boss, who he then claimed he killed out of self defense. Alvarez was convicted to life in prison. Irma and her son moved back into their home because they felt the murders weren’t the home’s fault.

Stephen Griffiths was known as the “Crossbow Cannibal” after killing three women in Bradford, West Yorkshire between 2009 and 2010. He was caught after one murder was recorded on a security camera. The footage showed Griffiths shooting the woman in the head with a crossbow and dragging her back to his apartment. He dismembered all three women before eating their flesh. Parts of their bodies were found floating in a river nearby. Griffiths was sentenced to life in prison and his apartment was put back on the market. After some remodeling was done, a local university student moved in.

Between 1972 and 1978, John Wayne Gacy, aka “The Killer Clown”, sexually assaulted and murdered at least 33 teenage boys in this house. He would lure young boys inside his house and handcuff them to a wooden board before strangling them to death. When the police searched his house, they found 29 bodies in the crawl space under his home, and Gacy admitted to dumping another five in the river.
