Woman Sentenced to 30 Days Was Accidentally Kept in Jail for 23 Years

A woman in the Philippines was sentenced to prison for 30 days. She just left jail — 23 years later.

How she got in this situation will have you banging your head against a wall in frustration.


In short, the woman was accused of, and initially convicted of, a more serious crime that would carry with it a long sentence. However, upon appeal, her charge was downgraded to a lesser one, which was punishable by only a month in jail.


But because a co-defendant filed an automatic appeal, she wasn’t released and remained imprisoned for more than two decades. I know, that sucks!


Eventually, the country’s DOJ Action Center stepped in, helping her file a habeas corpus petition and, over time, allowing her to leave jail.


I dare say that if a system allows this to happen, it might be time to change the system!
