Will ‘South Park’ Be the Next Show to Be Canceled Because of the Paramount Sale?
After the surprise announcement of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s cancellation, many are wondering if the long-running animated series is next.

On Thursday, Paramount shocked the industry by announcing that it would be terminating The Late Show franchise that started with David Letterman back in the 1990s. This is surprising because, in the world of late-night television, Colbert had consistently drawn in the most viewers during his timeslot. In fact, Colbert’s show was the only late-night show to actually gain viewers within the past year.
Apparently, this still wasn’t enough to save the program, and now it’s getting the axe — along with, potentially, some other major Paramount properties like South Park and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
For context, things aren’t too hot in the TV world right now — and Paramount specifically has been taking a significant beating. The company recently paid a $16 million settlement to President Trump that Colbert jokingly categorized as a “bribe,” though the company insists that such commentary isn’t related to his show’s cancellation. Now, it looks like the company is trying to make cuts, and it’s not afraid to get rid of core programs in the process.
Stewart was asked about cancellation rumors, and we’ll just say his response didn’t inspire hope. “I honestly don’t know,” he said. Stewart’s current contract expires in December, and industry experts are worried that the network will not only let him go, but cancel The Daily Show altogether. Stewart further stated, “They haven’t called me and said like, ‘Don’t get too comfortable in that office, Stewart.’ But let me tell you something, I’ve been kicked out of shittier establishments than that. We’ll land on our feet.”
Regarding South Park, the creators’ current deal only has them signed on to produce content until the end of 2027. The deal also cost Paramount a pretty penny, and if the company is trying to save cash, there’s a strong possibility that they cut out the creators entirely.
What will Matt Stone and Trey Parker do if South Park gets canceled? Who knows, maybe they’ll go back to their old gig — if you know, you know.
