We all know that Taylor Swift is one of the most notorious private jet lovers in the world, and she certainly didn’t help things when she pulled an Elon Musk and threatened legal action against Jack Sweeney, the young man behind the accounts that track celebrity private jet use and who has previously clashed with Musk himself.
But it’s another thing entirely to actually see her private jet usage throughout the year mapped out in a video courtesy of, who else, Jack Sweeney. Swift has two private jets, though her team and supporters have been quick to inform critics that she often loans out her second jet when she’s not using it — a generous queen!
2023 was obviously a big year for Swift. Her Eras Tour took her throughout the U.S., Mexico and South America, and she started dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, resulting in both her and her jet spending a lot of time in Kansas City. 2024 will see her traveling even more, with her having already completed Eras Tour dates in Australia and Singapore ahead of summer dates throughout Europe before returning for final dates in the U.S. and Canada later this year.
So much focus is on Swift’s private jet usage because of just how prolific it is, even when compared to other celebrities. In 2022, before the Eras Tour had even started, her carbon emissions were some of the highest in the world for any single individual, with her jets producing an estimated 8,300 tonnes of carbon emissions, 1,800 times higher than the average person’s emissions and 576 times higher than the average American’s.
Even putting the carbon emissions aside, this much travel just seems exhausting, and yet, Swift rarely lets her schedule get to her, performing three-and-a-half-hour long shows several nights in a row at each of the stops on her tour. Travel is undoubtedly less grueling when you’re flying private, but surely it’s still somewhat inconvenient, no?
The strangest part of the video is definitely the times when her two planes are flying around at the same time — this is presumably when she’s loaning them out, although they could also be test flights or the jets being repositioned to avoid airport charges. Swift obviously agreed the optics of this weren’t great, because back in January, she sold her second jet, downsizing to just one.
Hurrah! The planet is saved!
