The Phoenix Open is golf’s self-proclaimed “People’s Open,” and allows its fans the unique opportunity to get football-level rowdy while watching their traditionally stuck-up sport. Sponsored by Waste Management, the event promised to be the world’s “largest Zero-Waste sporting event,” but boy did they have a problem controlling their trash in 2024.

The WM Phoenix Open traditionally begins by allowing fans to sprint for seats at the course’s famous 16th hole, and this year was no different. Except that the event allegedly accidentally neglected to scan tickets, allowing hundreds of people to enter without permission.

“People were getting in for free, people were getting into VIP boxes for free,” Dustinwilliamson23, a bartender at the event said.

“There were almost half a million people on the course at that one time.” Soon he, along with every other server at the event was instructed by the Scottsdale Police and Fire Departments to stop serving alcohol. But the damage was already done.

““S–tshows. Totally out of control on every hole,” golfer Byeong Hun An posted to Twitter. He was far from the only player to think so, and a video of Zach Johnson telling a fan to “shut up” also went viral. Check out these trashy scenes from Waste Management 2024.
