A church in Austria was surprised when it received a package containing a skull. It turns out, however, this wasn’t a threat — it was an apology.

According to a note included in the box, a German tourist had visited the church 60 years prior. While exploring the catacombs beneath the church, he found — and stole — a skull.

Now reaching the end of his life, the tourist decided to send the skull back, along with a note explaining how much guilt he’d felt about what he had done.

“After his clarification of the matter, it was touching that someone would wish to make amends for an act of youthful exuberance,” Franz Zehetner of Vienna's St Stephen's Cathedral told the BBC. "Also that he had carefully preserved the skull over the years — even [if] it was not according to the rules — instead of carelessly getting rid of it."

Remember: it’s never too late to ask for forgiveness — or send your stolen skull back.
