In 2020, Harrison Gilks was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), a rare cancer that forms in the soft tissue. The New Brunswick, Canada teen wasn’t about to let cancer take over his life, so he created a bucket list of things he wanted to do before he died. Gilks, being an avid user of TikTok, documented his inspirational journey.
“Fuck it…Bucket List Series, Part 1”, stated Gilks. That was the beginning of what would become a whirlwind of incredible adventures including but not limited to meeting country music sensation Luke Combs, standing on an NFL field with Darren Hall of the Atlanta Falcons, and joining the Montreal Canadiens bench at ice level.
As his TikTok channel grew in popularity, people from all around the world began following his uphill battle, which included updates on his health as well as his crossing off bucket list items. Unfortunately, those health updates got bleaker as the months went on, yet Gilks’ positive attitude never seemed to fade.
After meeting more athletes, seeing NYC from the air, and flying over the Rocky Mountains, Gilks was off to Mexico for some relaxation and parasailing.
Unfortunately, Gilks experienced medical complications on his trip and was taken by ambulance to the hospital. In a final video from the comfort of his hospital bed, Harrison stated, “The doctor said I don’t have a whole lot of time left. Chances of me going home…very slim.” With that, he thanked everyone around the globe for their support.
Harrison Gilks passed away peacefully on March 30th. The strength and positivity he showed during the last year of his life is something that we need more of in this world. RIP, young king.
