The U.S. Government Is Trying to Stop Sharks from Eating Fish

And humans, of course, but the fish are more important.

For years, fishermen have had a problem: Sharks keep taking their fish off the line!

Sure, it’s not that big of a problem, but fishermen really, really don’t like it. So, they’ve lobbied the government to help them figure out how to get sharks to, well, stop eating their fish.

On paper, the SHARKED Act is designed to create a task force to study shark behavior and make recommendations accordingly. However, one part of the bill notes that the task force has another mission: fix shark depredation, which refers to a shark partially or completely taking a hooked fish off a fishing line.

How are they going to do this? Experts worry that part of the proposed solution will involve just getting rid of the animal entirely, which isn’t expressly prohibited by the bill. After all, President Trump is known not to like the animal, describing himself as “not a big fan” of sharks and once tweeting that “Sharks are last on my list.”

Personally, I’d like to keep sharks around — if only because the end of sharks means no more Shark Week.
