There is a new hero on the internet, who goes by the moniker fatmummy222 on Reddit - and they've done something that r/castiron has only ever dreamed of - coating a cast iron pan with 80 layers of seasoning.

If none of this means anything to you, because your cabinets are full of nonstick skillets, then today is the day you're converted to the cast iron cult. A good cast iron pan will last longer and clean easier than its nonstick counterpart, and part of this is due to the pan's 'coating'.

A well-kept cast iron pan needs to be 'seasoned' and this seasoning is done by forming a hard layer on the pan with oil. A cast iron skillet needs only one coat, which can be maintained with heat and oil, but someone has taken it upon themselves to give the users of r/castiron a new ick by coating their pan 80 times.

For the last month, u/fatmummy222 has documented their journey of coating their cast iron pan a total of 80 times, and the results are like looking into the face of God.

One user joked that u/fatmummy222's cast iron is the "cast iron pan with an OnlyFans page" as his most recent update received 50,000 upvotes and 4,000 comments, while other users commented, "There's a point where the built-up layer of seasoning is so great that it would be possible to polish it, right? It'd literally be a f**king mirror." Needless to say, u/fatmummy222 has grown a huge following on the subreddit as their coating journey shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.

Regardless of your stance on cookware, or your familiarity with cast iron, the joy fatmummy222, and their pan has brought the small community of r/castiron should make you feel lucky to be alive in a day and age where people doing things they love online can be celebrated instead of mocked.

The subreddit is hooked on their journey as u/subtxtcan put it, "You are a psychopath. I support this behavior and I'm coming along for the ride!"
