The FBI Is Probably Monitoring Your Discord Chats

Even if you haven’t broken any laws!

In the wake of the Charlie Kirk assassination, people have been poring through the available information to try to make some, if any, sense of the attack and the potential motives of the alleged perpetrator, Tyler Robinson.

Of course, given that it’s the year 2025, some people have decided to not take this seriously at all and instead simply meme about it. One way people have done so is by buying the shirt worn by the alleged attacker at the time, then sharing photos of that purchase with their friends.

As it turns out, this could be enough to get you a call from the police.

As reported by journalist Ken Klippenstein, a man purchased the aforementioned shirt off of eBay, then shared an image of his purchase with his friends. Soon after, he received three calls from the police asking why he had posted the image of the shirt — in a private Discord group.

“The FBI, or the intelligence community, evidently is monitoring Discord private messaging — even from people who have broken no law,” concludes Klippenstein.

While Discord has admitted to responding to around two emergency disclosure requests from law enforcement per day, their stated policy is that they only do so when the company “has a good faith belief that an emergency involving an imminent risk of death or serious bodily injury requires disclosure of information without delay.” It’s unclear how the sharing of a T-shirt purchase meets this standard.

They also don’t tell people when they’re doing it, so the cop screwed up by telling the man they were monitoring his chats.

In short, if you want your communications to not be read by the authorities, you’ve gotta stick with the ol’ “two cans tied by a string” method.
