The AWS Outage Caused Multiple ‘Smart Beds’ to Overheat

Meanwhile, all of us brokies with regular mattresses slept just fine.

The Amazon Web Services outage had a lot of consequences. DoorDash orders couldn’t be completed, teens couldn’t send each other illicit images on SnapChat — and people with smart beds were getting cooked alive.

As soon as the blackout hit, users of internet-connected “smart beds,” which control the temperature of the bed as the user sleeps, began reporting that their beds were either stuck at a single temperature, or that they were getting really, really hot.

“Girlfriend’s side of the bed set itself to 110f and won’t turn down. Nightmare,” wrote a user on the Eight Sleep subreddit.

Others complained about the opposite, saying their beds were now stuck at frigid temperatures.

“This sucks so bad I'm freezing,” said another Redditor.

Hilariously, some smart bed models also offer users the option of inclining their bed. As soon as AWS crashed, these beds were stuck in an incline, with no way to get them down.

Some things are perfectly fine to rely on the internet to function properly. Maybe your bed is not one of them.
