Ever wonder what the proper name is for that strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street? The answer – at least to Hoosiers – is a lot stranger than you’d think.

On Monday, July 3, beloved Twitter page @DepthsOfWiki gave us an answer, revealing that in Central Indiana, that patch of grass is referred to as the “sidewalk taint.”

“Omg,” Annie Rauwerda, the page’s long-running administrator captioned a photo depicting the tidbit listed under the Wikipedia entry for “Road Verge,” a.k.a. the sidewalk taint’s more common moniker.

“I knew there were regional words for this, but I didn't realize how many there were?!??!?!?!” she continued in a subsequent post before thanking Twitter user @ninafogel for helping her uncover the discovery.

“As a resident of central indiana I have not met a singular person ever who has said this but now I will absolutely be calling it this,” mused @Pup64HCP.

“Citation EXTREMELY needed on this one,” joked @david_haitch.

Here’s to the sidewalk taint – forever mastering the in-betweens.
