Though 'Weird Al' Yankovic may be known for his parodies, he was most certainly not goofing around when it came to his message to his Spotify listeners, using his slot to get candid about just how s—tty the platform can be when it comes to paying artists — himself included.
“I just want to thank you all for your amazing support,” The “Amish Paradise” artist said in a video message for his top listeners, released as a part of Wednesday’s Spotify Wrapped.
“It’s my understanding that I had over 80 million streams on Spotify this year, so if I'm doing the math right, that means I earned $12 dollars, enough to get myself a nice sandwich at a restaurant,” he continued. “So from the bottom of my heart, thanks for your support — and thanks for the sandwich.”

Though Yankovic likely made slightly more than $12 in streaming revenue this year — presuming the musician landed 5% of his royalties, he would have taken home roughly $13,600 this year per an online Music Royalty Calculator — several commended his message, one that comes as artists make a measly $0.003 per stream.

“Dude rules so hard,” wrote @ScottieLambchop.
“Man told Spotify to eat it,” added @mackyp4.
But beyond bringing to light Spotify’s poor approach to paying artists, we can't help but praise the “White & Nerdy” singer for bringing light to an arguably more important topic: The skyrocketing cost of lunch.
As @brostoevksy so aptly asked, “$12 for a nice sandwich? What is this 2019?”
