Tesla Is Redesigning Its Door Handles Because People Keep Getting Stuck Inside Their Cars
That *does* feel important.

Have you ever had a friend show you their new Tesla, only for you to spend a good minute or so trying to figure out how the doors work?
That because, rather that use “handles” like every other car maker, Tesla has opted to use electric switches that are powered by an awkward handle on the outside and a button on the inside.
The problem with this is that, if your car is on fire, these switches don’t always work, and manual switches can either be difficult to find in an emergency or unknown to those who have never rode in a Tesla before, which can trap one outside or, in the worst cases, inside their car. Kinda the last thing you want in an emergency situation, IMO!
Now, Tesla has admitted that this was probably a screw-up and that they’re going to look into making handles that work.
Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla’s design chief, said on a podcast Wednesday that the company plans to merge the manual and electronic door-release systems to make it faster and easier to get out of the car in a “panic situation.”
“The idea of combining the electronic one and the manual one together into one button, I think, makes a lot of sense,” he said on Bloomberg’s Hot Pursuit! podcast. “That’s something that we’re working on.”
Yeah, most other car makers got there a couple decades ago — but good you’re finally swinging around!
