Fans of soft lighting, photographers, and “rustic” restaurants charging $25 for a fry-less burger aren’t the only ones mourning the loss of incandescent light bulbs. Shortly after the long-awaited national ban on selling the popular lights went into effect on Tuesday, one novice stone headed to Reddit in search of a new, legal way to continue their hopefully equally legal gardening hobby.
A federal rule that took effect on Tuesday will largely consign one of the world's great inventions — the incandescent light bulb — to the technological dustbin. https://t.co/cutrMfvxds

‘Can I use this to grow a single weed plant ?” wrote Redditor u/Leaderboard_player alongside a screengrab of a much more energy-efficient LED bulb from AmazonBasics in a post shared on r/microgrowery.
The answer? Probably not.
Beyond prompting a few Redditors to take a walk down memory lane, reminiscing about prosperous plants that quite literally stemmed from these outdated lights — “you can get very good results with lamp bulbs,” wrote u/ Athlete-Then flaunting an absolutely massive nug — LED lights are likely not the answer to growing weed under these new restrictions.
“If you want to be very disappointed in your plant, this would be an excellent light to choose,” advises fellow Redditor PhotoProxima, noting that LED lights are “made to light rooms for people, not provide energy to plants.”
“If you really need a low-wattage single bulb, at least grab one that is tuned for plants,” he continued.
Moral of the story? If you’re looking to save money with DIY weed, at least pay up for decent growing lighting — it’s stoner economics.
