Someone Fell Into a Nuclear Reactor, But Was Totally Fine
It just happens sometimes.

While there have been several terrible and regrettable incidents in the past, nuclear power is, by and large, fairly safe — even for the people who work right up next to it. It’s so safe, in fact, that one person recently fell into a reactor and was totally fine.
Okay, let’s explain.
In short, reactor cavities are filled with water for cooling. It’s dangerous if you get close to the core — but up above, where the water is just chillin’, is mostly (mostly) harmless.
According to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, someone was working near a nuclear reactor last week when they fell into the cavity. Not only that, but they accidentally ingested some of the water.
So, how did the workers react? Well, pretty calmly. They removed the man, decontaminated him and filed the appropriate report about the incident. He was then sent for medical assessment, but chances are high that he’s just fine. The radiation exposure was extremely low, contamination was minimal, he didn’t ingest much water (which was likely relatively safe anyway), and both medical and regulatory procedures in these situations are very thorough.
In short, it’s good to know that you can fall into a modern nuclear reactor and be fine. If that was one of your fears about nuclear power, you can check it off the list.
