In what is only the latest example in a long line of Elon Musk’s ridiculous decisions since purchasing Twitter, the CEO of X has now made everybody’s likes private, ruining the lives of every nosy person who relied on public likes to learn more about their friends, crushes and even enemies.

Many Twitter users, particularly attractive women, have seen an uptick in the number of horny likes they’re receiving in the hours since likes went private, as demonstrated by the above tweet featuring one man liking 68 selfies in a row, dating back to 2021.

Tech public relations expert and columnist Ed Zitron took the opportunity to highlight a recent tweet of Musk’s in which he boasted about the massive increase in likes after they were made private; no longer worried about the potential public shaming, gooners and creeps are free to spam all the hot women they like, although it’s worth bearing in mind that users can still see likes on their own posts and block you if you’re being blatantly weird in their media tab.

Several commenters were quick to point out that Musk’s chart showed roughly a 10 percent difference, which isn’t significant, and that Musk’s history with numbers means we shouldn’t take anything he says at face value. The numbers are ultimately immaterial, anyway. Nobody normal cares about how many likes are being sent across Twitter at any given moment.

Instead, people are genuinely mourning the ability to stalk the likes tab of people they’re crushing on, people they’re hoping to cancel (there are fewer easier ways to call someone out than to catch them liking something Problematic) or people vague-tweeting about a drama, in which case their likes could go some way to helping you figure out what exactly they’re tweeting about.

Much like the removal of Circles, it’s unclear who Musk had in mind when he made this decision, although many users have speculated that it was done solely so Musk’s own unusual likes will no longer be scrutinized.

Not to worry, Elon; we still have your bizarre tweets to scrutinize to our hearts’ content.
