It’s the most painful way you can get out of work.

I don’t know if you’ve been following the Russia-Ukraine news, but it seems miserable for pretty much everyone involved. Therefore, it’s not terribly surprising that young people are doing everything they can to try to get out of fighting: Young Ukrainians are hiding or leaving the country, and for young Russians who have entered the conflict, they’re apparently trying to get out by dramatically hurting themselves, then claiming battlefield injury.

According to United24, the Russian government recently announced the results of an investigation into false injury claims in the army. Per the investigation, more than 30 servicemen from Russia’s elite 83rd Airborne Assault Brigade deliberately fired at themselves and/or each other in order to claim combat injuries and receive compensation.

The total cost of these illicit payments exceeded $2.5 million, and some even received awards for their “bravery.”

Now, the soldiers involved are being charged, and they will likely have their money, rewards and freedom taken away. That, and they’re still injured from their self-inflicted wounds.

Pretty bad deal, if you ask me!
