The world is unfair. Some people have real problems, while other people have elaborate gaming console collections. Redditors discovered this very dichotomy when one user took to r/antiwork to complain about being broke despite making $35 an hour. They complained that their rent costs $12,000 a year for an 800-square-foot apartment, they’ve never left their state because they can’t afford to and they’ve been working full-time since the age of 16. Not an uncommon situation, but not a particularly blessed one either.
However, as they’re wont to do, users took a look at OP’s post history and discovered that they had an entire room in their house containing at least five arcade game machines. This led to people commenting things like, “I saw your post on your arcade room &….. F–ing ––…. You have money. Your entire place is massive with a ton of arcade stuffs that’s well beyond what the majority of Americans can afford."
And: “This post smells like the one about the ‘self-made’ woman who’s parents built her a $100,000 ‘tiny’ home she could live in, paid for all her living expenses, made $60K a year working for her dad’s company & only managed to save $7,500 for a downpayment on a 3 percent mortgage for a house. That’s pretty much OP in a nutshell it seems.”
Another commenter put it more succinctly: “The audacity and entitlement it took you to make this post while literally having an arcade in your apartment is f–ing insane.”
I guess you could say I'm in pretty deep, although not the most deep from what I've seen

After the backlash, OP edited their post to clarify that they make around $50,000 to $55,000 a year, they pay $12,000 in taxes, their car loan costs $600 per month and sales tax where they live is 10 percent. To boot, they also have a partner who hasn’t been able to work since March 2020. They also added that they obtained much of their collection from “trading, connections and community work.”
In their final edit, OP came to the realization that they live beyond their means and it’s “time for big changes,” thanking everyone who commented for helping to open their eyes “in ways that are very helpful and positive.”
Huh, that doesn’t sound like Reddit, but sometimes an outsider’s perspective can help us obtain some of our own; after all, everyone needs a reality check from time to time. Hopefully OP will cool down on obtaining arcade machines for a while, lest they become the living embodiment of Dril’s candles tweet.
