Pretty much everyone on the internet has found themselves mindlessly scrolling subreddits when they’re bored, and if you have, you would have noticed that subs like AITA often feature incredibly outlandish stories that beggar belief and attract countless comments dismissing them as fake. At this point, it’s fairly safe to assume that many of the stories shared on Reddit aren’t real, and are often just a user’s attempt at flexing their creative writing skills or farming karma.
One such subreddit, r/SluttyConfessions, has itself been dealing with an influx of obviously fake posts in recent months, prompting one user to call it out a few months ago.
The user, who has since deleted their account, wrote, “35f. Speaking as a woman, most of the ‘confessions’ on here are clearly not real. However, the obvious nonsense gets more love than the more sincere seeming ones, so you guys are your own worst enemies.”
She went on to call out users who complain about fake posts but fail to “appreciate higher quality work”; she also cited people’s unrealistic expectations around realistic sexual scenarios thanks to porn as a factor contributing to people believing, or at least upvoting, increasingly ludicrous scenarios.
Sorting the sub by top posts suggests she has a point. The most upvoted post from the past year is from a teen who wrote, “Guy was nice to me when I was fat, now I let him fuck me all he wants,” which sounds entirely like wish fulfillment, as does the third most upvoted post from the past year, “When I was a stripper, I paid to fuck a client in the VIP room.” Not to mention the sheer number of posts that are from 18-year-old girls, which is reminiscent of early aughts chat rooms when everyone’s ASL was 18/F/California.
In a pinned comment on the callout post, a sub moderator said that they hoped the post would serve as a “significant turning point in the history of the sub” and that people will hopefully focus on upvoting realistic stories going forward.
Honestly, I’m not sure that anything involving a subreddit called SluttyConfessions is anywhere near that serious — most people on Reddit know many of the stories and anecdotes they’re reading are fake, but that’s part of the fun. Or as one wise user asked/pointed out, “People don’t read these thinking it’s just erotica?”
