Last week the entire world had its eyes and ears turned towards the sea, searching for a lost OceanGate submarine shuttling five super-rich men to the Titanic’s wreckage, and ultimately their deaths. But while the internet was developing a newfound fascination with the underwater world, it was also discovering a new worst fear; slowly dying while trapped in an inescapable metal tube.
It makes sense then, that if there’s one thing this whole ordeal made us not want to do, it’s go on an underwater tour ourselves. Unfortunately, some people picked the absolute worst time to book their own nonrefundable submarine tours, and now they’re going… reluctantly.
“The way I would have just lost that money baby,” Kim commented on one TikTok.
Of course, a fully certified professionally operated tourist submarine is completely safe, especially compared to what Sydney Ugalde called a “homemade hydro flask,” but that can’t stop the SUB-conscious mind from wondering.
If any of these folks really didn’t want to go, they could have looked towards the sunk cost fallacy for inspiration. But as this video from the inside of an Aruba marine biology tour shows, sub-tours actually look quite fun. Similar trips are available in Hawaii.
What do you know? Going on a real submarine to a depth of 150 feet is perfectly safe. Going in a homemade joy-ride tube to 13,000 feet isn’t.
