Back in 2020, when everyone lost their jobs and we all got stuck inside our houses, the government gave us some money to help pay off bills.

Of course, it wasn’t nearly enough, and plenty of people blew their “stimmy” checks on anime statues and other meaningless nonsense — but hey, it was nice. It was so nice, in fact, that the government did it again two more times.

Now, Trump says he’s going to make sure Americans get sent another $2,000 check. The reason? Well, the honest answer is “bribery,” but the answer the Administration is going with is “savings due to the tariffs.”

In case you’ve never Googled “why is everything so expensive now,” the Trump Administration instituted a strict tariff policy on pretty much every other country. Trump himself didn’t seem to understand the potential impact of this — for example, he said both that the tariffs would spur American manufacturing and that the profits could be great enough to eliminate the income tax, apparently not realizing that those two ideas directly contradict each other.

Since then, there’s been basically zero additional manufacturing in the U.S., and companies have responded by simply increasing their prices. Trump, however, is seemingly just dubbing this a success. Now, in a recent post on Truth Social, he says that, thanks to the tariffs, “a dividend of at least $2000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone.”

Is this technically just money being paid back to us that we already spent in higher grocery and goods prices? Yes. But hey, I’m not going to complain about another check!
