Though nabbing a Nobel Prize would easily stand as a career-high for any author, to legendary writer Doris Lessing, it was just another Wednesday.
A video depicting the late novelist discovering that she had won the highly-coveted literature honor and its $750,000 cash prize back in 2007 — five years before her death — began making the rounds on social media this week.
“Have you heard the news?” asked one reporter who caught Lessing while on the way home from a grocery run.
“No,” she replied.
“You’ve won the Nobel Prize for literature,” he said.
Despite earning one of the world’s most prestigious writing awards, one that has been bestowed upon literary greats like Earnest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, and Albert Camus, Lessing appeared to be less-than-thrilled … and arguably visibly annoyed.
“Oh Christ,” she replied, glancing towards the ground.
While at first, she headed back to the cab transporting her, she later elaborated on her win while heading back inside from her trip to the store.
"I've won all the prizes in Europe, every bloody one, so I'm delighted to win them all,” she said, dubbing her victory “a royal flush.”
We only hope we can someday write as well as Lessing … and more importantly, give such few f—ks.
