As North Korea is one of the most heavily sanctioned countries in the world, they’re always looking for ways to bring in some extra foreign currency. In the past, this has involved hacking and counterfeiting U.S. dollars. Today, however, they’re trying something new: tourism.
According to the BBC, the DPRK is planning to open a resort town called Wonsan Kalma on July 1st. State media says that this resort town, which is situated on a beautiful 2.5 mile coastline, can accommodate 20,000 visitors and is filled with hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and a water park. Of course, given that this is state media, we can’t be sure if any of that is true, but it sounds nice!
So, you may be wondering, who is this for? Well, it may be surprising for people in the West to hear, but tourism in North Korea isn’t *that* unheard of. People from all over the world want to see the DPRK, and while 2020 saw the country close its borders to most tourists, the country is now letting in limited amounts of Chinese and Russian citizens.
It is thought that this resort town will primarily accommodate people from those countries, but who knows? If you’re looking for a unique place to visit this summer, why not give North Korea a shot?
Don’t answer that question.
