A reporter for New York publication THE CITY was surprised when an advisor to Mayor Eric Adams handed her a bag of potato chips and insisted she keep it. She was even more surprised when she learned that the bag contained over $140.

In what may be the dumbest bribery case in recent memory, Adams’ campaign worker Winnie Greco was caught handing over money to a journalist. When the journalist asked her what on earth she was doing, she began repeatedly apologizing and asking the journalist not to publish anything about it.

That’s not how you’re supposed to bribe!

“I’m so sorry. It’s a culture thing. I don’t know. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry. I feel so bad right now. I’m so sorry, honey,” Greco reportedly said. “Can we forget about this? I try to be a good person. Please. Please. Please don’t do in the news nothing about me… I just wanted to be her friend. I just wanted to have one good friend. It’s nothing.”

While this may be Greco’s explanation, her lawyer has another one: she’s Chinese. “I can see how this looks strange,” said her lawyer Steven Brill. “But I assure you that Winnie’s intent was purely innocent. In the Chinese culture, money is often given to others in a gesture of friendship and gratitude. Winnie is apologetic and embarrassed by any negative impression or confusion this may have caused.”

Believe him? I sure didn’t, so I asked my Chinese friend if this was a thing in her culture. She just laughed at me, which I’m going to assume means “No.”

Greco has since been suspended.
