Man Accidentally Got Paid His Colleagues’ Salaries and Refuses to Return It
Sorry, boss — that’s your problem, not mine!

A factory worker in Russia is now locked in a legal battle with his employer after they accidentally sent him tens of thousands of dollars.
Vladimir Rychagov of Khanty-Mansiysk was expecting 46,954 rubles ($581) in vacation pay. Instead, when he opened his banking app, he saw he was also transferred over 7 million rubles ($87,000). He quickly got a call from his company explaining that the money was meant for the salary payments at another branch and asking him to send it back.
However, Rychagov refused. He argued that, based on what he’s read, he’s only obligated to return the money if it was a billing error — not a software error. Since the company told him it was a software error, and the payment appeared under his name and was labeled “salary,” he says he’s entitled to keep it.
In the time since his refusal, Rychagov hasn’t been slow to spend the money. He got a car and relocated his family, continuing to spend the cash until his accounts were frozen and his former company accused him of fraud.
The fraud case has since been dropped, but the company is taking Rychagov to court seeking a total repayment. Rychagov has lost his first two appeals, but he’s currently escalating the case to the Russian Supreme Court. In the meantime, he hasn’t returned a cent.
What do you think? Should he pay his employer back? Or is it his once it enters his bank account?
