Quinta Brunson’s Emmy win for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series for her hit show, Abbott Elementary, was disrupted by a Jimmy Kimmel bit taken too far last night at the 74th Emmy Awards. Prior to Brunson’s acceptance speech, Kimmel was dragged onto the stage by the presenter of the award, Will Arnett, in what appeared to be a bit commenting on Kimmel’s Emmy loss to Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

With a passed-out Kimmel on the floor, Arnett announces the win for Brunson’s show. As Brunson happily takes the stage, Kimmel does not bother removing himself, and she attempts to get him up with a “Jimmy, wake up, I won!” and pausing for a second with a laugh, yet he remains fixed to the floor, giving her a careless thumbs up.

The internet found Kimmel’s actions far from funny, taking Twitter by storm declaring the obvious display of white male privilege by attempting to upstage a successful Black woman’s big moment.

As for Brunson, she reacted by stating “I felt like the bit didn’t bother me that much, I don’t know what the internet thinks,” adding in a joking manner, “tomorrow maybe I’ll be mad at him. I’m going to be on his show on Wednesday, so I might punch him in the face.” The internet surely hopes she will.
