Given that the streets are clean, all the food is delicious and everything seems designed to be cute, it’s pretty easy to fetishize Japan — just ask anyone who’s ever ordered a katana!

However, there are a lot of social issues in Japan that can make actually living there unpleasant, especially if you’re a woman. If you’re just an everyday gal trying to get to work, you have to deal with pervs trying to get a snap of you on the train — and if you’re a celebrity, you have to appear perpetually young, flawless and, crucially, single.

If you violate any of these tenets, there’s likely to be issues, as Momoka Tojo, a former member of the female idol group Katacoto＊Bank, can tell you firsthand.

For the past year, fans of Tojo have been able to see a unique “good night” selfie from the idol every day for the past year. However, this isn’t because she actually wanted to post them. Instead, it’s punishment from her management for daring to post a picture with her boyfriend.

Even though she deleted the post, her management company demanded that she was to be and appear single — and so, she was forced to post a “good night” selfie every single day, even after she left the group. Now, that year is over, and so she is no longer required to post the pictures.

“I would like to offer my sincere apologies for the great inconvenience I’ve caused to my fans and all those involved who support me on a daily basis due to my careless actions,” she wrote after the conclusion of the “good night” posts. “Over the past year, I’ve deeply reflected on my actions and have faced myself honestly. From now on, I’ll be even more mindful of my words and actions so that this never happens again.”
