Though Elon Musk may have cemented himself — for better or worse — as a titan of the tech industry, it appears there’s one modern invention he still has yet to master: The elusive cowboy hat.
During a recent trip to the Texas, Mexico border alongside Rep. Tony Gonzales, the divisive Twitt— sorry, X overlord attempted to get into the spirit of the Lone Star State, sporting a brand new ten-gallon hat.

“I am, you know, as … an immigrant to the United States, I’m extremely pro-immigrant,” Musk, who originally hails from South Africa, explained. “I believe that we need a greatly expanded legal immigration system and that we should let anyone in the country who is hardworking and honest and will be a contributor to the United States.”
But while Musk offered his musings on immigration as he “eyeball[ed] the situation” at our nation’s southern border, several viewers found their own eyes drawn to something else — his conspicuously backwards cowboy hat.
According to the ultimate source on all things related to cowboy hats — WikiHow — properly sporting a ten-gallon hat is so easy a billionaire could do it.
“One of the most basic rules is making sure that the hat is on your head correctly with the front to the front,” reads the website’s entry on “How to Wear a Cowboy Hat Properly.” “A general rule is that the hat will be narrower at the front.”
Despite these cut-and-dry guidelines, Musk still appeared to have erred, with several Twitter users taking note of his hat’s strangely wide front brim.
“Elmo here trying to be a cowboy,” wrote Twitter user @Spawn_03 alongside a few screengrabs of the entrepreneur’s now-infamous trip. “Here's a hint bro: Real Cowboys don't wear their hats backwards.”

“Elon in the cowboy hat got the same vibes as the outfits rich women make when they thrift,” added @LeftAtLondon, as @PleaseBeGneiss envisioned a painful encounter that may have unfolded moments before Musk went live.
“personal assistant: sir your cowboy hat is on backwards.”
“elon musk: perhaps it is the simulation that is backwards,” they speculated.
Meanwhile, @davramdavram devised a solution designed to appeal to Musk’s creative proclivities.
“Elon should invent some sort of electric device that warns him if he puts a cowboy hat on backwards when he’s trying to look cool.”

But hey, maybe we’ve got it all wrong — Musk could simply be paying homage to his silly cowboy hat-sporting forefather, Doug Dimmadome of the Dimmsdale Dimmadome.
