As we’ve previously noted, lane-splitting is a pretty bad idea. However, it’s also near impossible to stop. Those darn motorcyclists are a wiley, agile bunch — and once you think you finally have them in your claws, they always find a way to zip just out of your reach.

Case in point: This video from an incident in which the NYPD allegedly tried to stop a motorcyclist from lane-splitting, sometimes called lane-filtering.

In the video, it appears as though the NYPD has shut down an entire highway to capture this one miscreant. As the cars wait, the police approach the cyclist on foot, with one holding a baton in hopes of knocking the man off his bike.

What does the cyclist do? He, uh, just drives around them. Yep, easy as that.

In hindsight, it’s hard to figure out how the NYPD really planned on solving this situation if he didn’t stop the bike. I’m not a scientist, but I’m positive man-on-bike is going to beat man-on-foot in a race about 100 percent of the time.

Commenters on Reddit were in agreement. “Pretty sure this is going to make them filter even more,” wrote one. “Did… did he try to stop a motorcycle with his body?” questioned another. “What a ridiculously dangerous response to filtering,” declared a third.

Next time, the cops should get some motorcycles of their own — or really put one of their horses to the test.
