Cartoons would have you believe that lassoing is a required skill in everyday life. In practice, however, the problems inherent to modern life require basically zero lasso ability. For example, when your landlord raises the rent, you can’t lasso your way out of it without getting immediately apprehended by police. (And we call this a free country!)

That said, there’s always a one-in-a-million shot that those hours you spent watching lasso YouTube tutorials might actually be useful. Now, such an instance has finally been captured on tape.

The video shows a crowd of beach-goers encountering a rare wild speed boat. While many stand back, one brave soul approaches the untamed beast, wielding a rope as his only weapon. With a single heave, he nags the boat’s motor, wrapping it around the propeller and eventually causing it to stop. The crowd applauds, and the man struts the boat ashore, clearly impressed by his own achievement.

Redditors were equally taken with the mystery man’s feat. “We just witnessed this guy’s go-to story for the rest of his life! ‘Oh yeah? Well one day I lassoed a runaway boat!,’” said a commenter. “He’ll be relieving that high for a while. If me, I’d tell the family to put a video link in my obituary and play this on a loop at the funeral home during memorial services,” added another. “This guy wrangles,” declared a third.

And yes, there were fun-killers in the comments who said things like, “Oh, he’s just getting the rope tangled around the propeller, that’s not lassoing.” My answer to that is, who cares? Have you ever lassoed a boat? Didn’t think so. At the very least, those people have to admit that there are worse ways to get a boat to stop.
