Though there are several places designed for tourists in Vietnam — Ha Long Bay, the Notre Dame Cathedral in Saigon, and Hoi An — a French travel blogger discovered that a stranger’s wedding is not among them, getting absolutely roasted after crashing a local couple’s nuptials.
Despite @alwingc’s optimism about simply inviting himself to a nearby wedding during his travels — “I was just like, ‘Okay, maybe I could join,’” he recalled of his logic in his since-deleted clip, one that has lived in infamy on r/VietNam — he quickly learned he was not invited for a very good reason.
“I come inside, obviously I was the only white guy, the only foreigner,” he lamented, noting that “everyone was looking” at him. “I felt so uncomfortable.”
@alwingc’s race, however, appeared to be one of several reasons for these dirty looks. After arriving at a crucial moment in the ceremony — “It was really uncomfortable,” he elaborated — he then decided to stick around, treating himself to food and alcohol reserved for the event’s actually invited guests.
Naturally, the people of r/VietNam were less than thrilled by the creator’s attempt at wining and dining himself on a local couple’s dime, heading to the comments to roast his disrespectful behavior.
“Treats people like he's in a zoo. Totally c—tish behavior,” wrote u/WeAllWantToBeHappy.
“This is so awkward it makes my skin crawl,” added u/JJ_Angel while u/Poggypog20 denounced the tourist’s entitlement as “a colonial mindset.”
But like all awkward moments, there is an important lesson to be gleaned from this whole ordeal: To paraphrase u/mikejones99501‘ss apt observation, the best way to avoid uncomfortable travel situations is to not show up at a godd—n stranger’s wedding uninvited.
