Ever since Elon Musk hinted that he could fire a large percentage of Twitter employees after taking over the social media brand, both the workers of Twitter and news outlets covering the story have been on edge. That tension was exploited perfectly when two dudes decided to play a little prank, and punked CNBC hard.
Carrying boxes of office supplies, two men claiming to be laid off Twitter employees were quickly grabbed for interviews, but it was the people of Twitter, not CNBC, who first knew that something was up. Giving the names of Rahul Ligma and Daniel Johnson, the pair together could be referred to as Ligma Johnson, a version of the ubiquitous ligma joke you know if you’ve spoken to a highschooler in the last year.
You got conned.

They are visibly shaken. Daniel tells us he owns a Tesla and doesn’t know how he’s going to make payments.

Falling for it hook line and sinker, CNBC put out their report before it became abundantly clear that these two pranksters were definitely not former Twitter employees. Allegedly, even the front desk workers of the Twitter office stated that they had never seen the men before. In the meantime, mass Twitter layoffs are yet to happen for real, but one would hope that a major news outlet might do the bare minimum of fact checking before choosing to report on it next time.
