Everyone’s Getting Fired for Posting Hot Takes About Charlie Kirk

Be careful what you say online these days.

After the assassination of Charlie Kirk, everyone and their mother went online to share their thoughts about his death. While some of these were tributes to the controversial figure, others took more of a “dancing on the man’s grave” approach. Now, some of the people who took the latter approach are discovering the limits of this country’s freedom of speech.

As reported by the Washington Post, some people aren’t content to just look at a joke they don’t like, call it tasteless and then move on with their lives. Instead, they’ve championed themselves as protectors of Kirk’s honor, becoming de facto Cancel Culture Activists and trying (successfully) to get people fired for their dark humor.

Others also began to run websites sharing the personal information of those who made posts critical of Kirk or downplaying and/or joking about his passing. Many of these sites have since been taken offline, given that “doxxing people over user-submitted, unverified information” is a really, really bad idea.

In short, if you really want to not be fired, you can’t expect people to start being normal. Instead, it’s best to follow the advice of the Utah governor and touch grass.
